REMEMBERING JEFF FREEMAN & SIDE EFFECTS

BAR HARBOR – For Jeff Freeman, who died on Oct. 1, 2009 at age 51, there was no middle ground.

He lived, loved and yelled with great passion. He was either admired as a brilliant artist or completely misunderstood. He didn’t hold much back. “WTF” he would shout when he saw something that he found particularly objectionable. Inside that gruff exterior beat a heart that was full of love and compassion for those closest to him – his wife Beth; son Drew; three brothers and their wives, Wayne and Fanee, Doug and Sharon, Kenny and Stephanie; his father Bob and mother-in-law Judith; brother-in-law Woody; his cat Doodle; his chickens; and his many special friends, especially Renee and Sam.

Jeff’s portfolio of art is vast and eclectic. His collection includes watercolor caricatures, aluminum furniture accented with glass or polished concrete, hypertufa pots he originally made for Beth’s gardening business but that eventually became a major component of his inventory for art shows and his Bar Harbor gallery, Side Effects. Jeff’s talents were much admired by artists and art lovers from MDI to Philadelphia, Chicago and Durango, Colo. and beyond. His admirers are especially fond of his time travel machine and the Ionizing Trans Mortifier.

He also was an ardent fisherman, who, his fellow fishermen said, “could catch fish from a rock pile.” Not exactly a wallflower, Jeff was hard to miss in a crowd, often appearing in pink plaid pants accessorized with red bowling shoes.

Jeff continues his journey to share his talents. From the Brewer Ice House Guest Book June 08: “Awesome! As I’m in awe of the creative talent and energy that went into making this space so unique. Thanks for sharing it with us. As we entered the front yard, my son said, ‘It looks like Tim Burton lived here.’ That’s quite a compliment.” Jeff was an active member of WERU Community Radio.
